A dressier take on Halloween from Bethany Lowe
Move over, orange! There’s a new player in town for Halloween. Gold metallic is one of the freshest emerging color trends for October 31.
The idea of swapping orange for gold in your Halloween mix may seem odd at first. After all, Halloween is casual and fun, while gold is considered as a standard-bearer of luxury and tradition. In the past, the market perceived gold to be too serious for a holiday focused on costumes and candy. But today, casual and traditional elements are being freely mixed. As a result, these barriers to gold are no longer viewed as insurmountable, let alone valid.
At the same time, metallic finishes have been on a tear for home interiors for about three years. Gold has led the charge. Today, metallic influences have already peaked in categories from fabrics to furniture, with tabletop and tile in between. It’s not uncommon for color or motif trends, once established in everyday décor, to slip into seasonal items. When metallics entered the mainstream, the stage was set for gold metallic in Halloween products.

Another important reason to embrace gold lies in the commitment to Halloween that now continues from childhood to adulthood. This is especially true for millennials, for whom Halloween has become a documented favorite. As recently as 2017, Alliance Data’s #MillennialHalloween Survey found that 65% of respondents claim they will never be too old for Halloween. They intend to celebrate forever. No wonder so many Halloween collections are looking more adult, paralleling a rising trend toward classic elements in decorating for millennial homes. Gold metallic is part of the story.
Black is already a leading choice for this holiday. It anchors any other color to Halloween, even when orange is not present. Teaming black with gold looks sophisticated, rich and right. If you want the trend portion of your future Halloween assortments to feel fresh and new, black-plus-gold metallic should be on your radar.
