A return to classic elements has begun moving the needle on home-décor style trends. It is part of a broader interest in traditional décor that has been building for about two years.

In the wake of COVID-19, The Trend Curve expects classicism to really take off.

Why do we believe this so strongly?

The answer is that classical elements speak to the deepest part of our heritage. Some are millennia old, and deep within our culture and our roots. They are grounding, comforting and dependable. These time-honored details connect us with those who withstood the trials and tribulations of history successfully enough that we can stand here today. They are foundational, which is exactly what consumers crave, now that it feels as though the very earth beneath our feet is shifting.

It is important to note that pieces in this emerging style don’t look stodgy or old-fashioned. We don’t expect this to change going forward. Designers will continue to cherry-pick classic elements. Only those with a pared-down character, a streamlined silhouette, an unexpected material or the use of on-trend color will be selected for this style direction. They will not be used in rooms filled with other classic pieces, but in an eclectic mix with transitional and contemporary ones. In this way, a bridge is created between the contemporary looks that have been so popular in the past, and the traditional tendencies that are building for the future.

From columns to statuary and from architectural decoration to marble and alabaster materials, all indicators are that classic elements should be on everyone’s radar.
